One of the early issues was that parts of the original artwork were getting worn down fast from constant rubbing against the dock. Instead of chasing the damage with endless touch-ups, I redesigned the layout so that no key visuals would fall in those high-friction areas. I painted the final piece by hand in the spring of 2022 using a custom color system based on Allgrip marine epoxy paints. (They even featured the project in one of their ads.)
What I Did
All logos were originally built in Illustrator and translated into precise EPS artwork. From there, I scaled and painted the entire boat by hand with high-durability materials. The final result has become a bit of a New York City summer icon—The Beast now runs alongside a second vessel featuring the same artwork, operating out of South Street Seaport six days a week.
